Our Story

The story of Thompsons of York started in 1926 when William Thompson opened his first grocery shop in Goodramgate, York.

A network of grocery shops were opened in the surrounding villages before moving into a different avenue – animal feed.

1932

The first load of animal feed was manufactured in the purpose built mill in Walmgate inside the city walls in York city centre.

The Walmgate Mill has since been converted into Student Accomodation.

1977

It's the Silver Jubilee year and Thompsons obtains planning permission to develop a greenfield site near York Auction Centre.

1978

The appropriately named Jubilee Mill was opened and began production.  The relocation meant that Thompsons was accessible to major road networks, including the A1(M) and the M62, making it easy for feed manufacture to be delivered across the North of England.

1978 Onwards

Since opening Jubilee Mill the company has continued to invest heavily in new equipment, to ensure that the latest stringent legislation can be adhered to, and feed is supplied in the sure knowledge that it is fully traceable and produced to the highest standards.

1985

In 1985 a second press line was installed, and in 1995 a third press line was introduced as production increased.

1996

In 1996 a new mixer was fitted which enabled Thompsons to separate the manufacture of ruminant and monogastric feeds, including medicated feeds, on species specific production lines.

2010

2010 saw further investment and expansion when the blending facility was opened to manufacture blends for beef and dairy herds.

2014

In 2014 the company was purchased by BATA Limited.  The innovative business opportunity provided by being part of the BATA Group will further ensure growth and the efficient supply of high levels of service of compound feeds along with other products, is maintained in an industry where change is a continuing feature.  Two well respected local businesses coming together is very much a forward thinking and positive step.

2019

In late 2019 a purpose built coarse mix manufacturing facility joined the BATA Group to enable us to manufacture and supply an extensive wide range of premium coarse mixes for pedigree and commercial livestock producers.
